Forum of Italian Researchers on Mesenchymal Stromal Stem Cells (FIRST) is a non-profit scientific society born in 2009 with the mission to generate a valuable network of Scientists studying human and animal mesenchymal progenitors from multiple tissues. Since their first uncovering by Alexander Friedenstein in the late 60', large part of biomedical scientific community has been deeply involved in understanding mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSC) nature for possible clinical applications. Nevertheless, several biological aspects of MSC are still far to be completely understood and this contrasts with the fact that MSC have been already introduced into clinics with a large variability of therapeutic outcomes.
FIRST aims to favour the generation and dissemination of novel knowledge on MSC biology for effective and safe cell therapy approaches. FIRST has the purpose to promote research and clinical applications of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells, favouring the collaboration between Italian and foreigner researchers involving national and international research Institutions and researchers. FIRST considers regulatory and ethical aspects as fundamental issues to create constructive, respectful and fearless interactions between governmental Bodies, ethical Committees and Scientists.
FIRST will constantly implement this mission by organizing annual scientific meetings, seminars, workshops, multimedia web-based forum and on site training courses for members. Additionally, FIRST wants to keep an open eye on young researchers in national and international laboratories, in order to promote the development of their professional skills and create present and future collaborative networks on MSC.
